Kia
Ora Family and Whanau,
I
would like to introduce myself to all of you, my name is Scarlett and I am a
student teacher in my 3rd year of study. Room 5 is a wonderful group
of learners and I look forward to working with them over the next few weeks.
Please feel free to pop into the class before or after school to meet me in
person.
At
school we have been exploring the concepts of volume and capacity. We have compared the capacity of a number of
different containers by pouring the contents of one container to another so
that we can see which container holds the most. We have also been using non-standard
units of measurement (spoons,
cups, jugs, handfuls) to compare the
capacity of different containers.
To support your child’s
learning at home this week you could encourage a couple of small activities. Your
child could try to find two containers that look different but hold similar
amounts of water. Your child could then ask family members to guess which
holds the most and see if anyone is “tricked". You could also let your
child help you measure ingredients when you are baking or cooking. Bath time is
also a great opportunity for some more practice in finding the volume of
containers. For example, how many eggcups does it take to fill a cup?
